T. H. U. G (The Hate U Give)
Hey guys, how's the week been so far? For me its been hellishly long with so much work to do hence today I'm sitting back channeling my inner movie junkie and writing a movie review on "THE HATE YOU GIVE"......
T. H. U. G is an American drama written by Audrey Wells, directed by George Tillman Jr., produced by 20th Century Fox ( I know right; they make only the best movies), and is based on Angie Thomas' Newyork times Best Selling Novel. Amandla Stenberg (our little angel from 2011's Colombiana and 2017's star movie Everything Everything) stars as Starr Carter a young black teen constantly switching between two worlds: the poor black neighborhood of Gardens Height where she lives with her black friends and family and the rich white prep school that she attends. Amandla alongside Russell Hornsby who acts the part of her father a former gangster and famous actress Regina Hall who plays the part of her mother try to encapsulate the black experience in one family.
In the movie, Starr endures the agonizing pain of watching her childhood best friend die right before her eyes as he's fatally gunned down by a white police officer who thinks he shot to defend himself. Soon there is a surmount of pressure as she's tackled from all sides and has to choose between snitching on the local gang leader in her black neighborhood who recruited her dead best friend to sell drugs or find her voice and stand up for what is right. Her world crumbles and she gets tested in the midst of a rising uproar of trials and lawsuits to determine if the white police officer walks away free or serves jail time. Her father who has instilled in her and her siblings from birth the laws that rule the black man in a white man's world wants her to find her voice but her mother will have none of it and wants her out of Garden Heights.
T.H. U. G is a great movie and Amandla tells and plays the book, Angie Thomas wrote with a conviction and maturity beyond her age and wows us her audience with such a great performance that no one should pass up on. "Movies are empathy machines" as Roger Ebert said and The Hate U Give can give us a sense of understanding as it inherently tries to pass the message of "BLACK LIVES MATTER" amidst the white privileges, gang wars, drug trade, and inferiority complex.
T.H.U.G has a - 97% rating from 'Rotten Tomatoes'
81% rating from 'Metacritic'
7/10 rating from 'IMDb'
and a 99% rating from 'Me' let's just say I can't let go of my remaining 1%.
Since the purpose of every movie review is to make you want to see the movie being reviewed I hope you want to see this movie so bad already and you're in luck as its available for download and streaming already. For people like me who look at other factors that make a movie a great one and worth repeated viewing, the cinematography, music, and soundtrack, as well as tone and movie message, is a 100.
