BECOMING AN INTENTIONAL BIBLIOPHILE (the life of one)

Are we gearing up for a fab weekend or what? Personally, I feel lazy, I haven't done anything extra except work this week and the Muslim holidays have been my alibi. Today's post is saying where all my book lovers at! I am totally psyched about making this piece with the amazing Ibukun Adebayo of http://abookwormandahalf.com/ (check this out to complete today's post). We've had to create this piece side by side for the last week and I was and am swell excited to publish this. So here goes everything.

I love books, I love reading. I have loved reading since I was six. A part of you will want to doubt this but if you grew up with my kind of parents you won't have any other life but the life of books. On the average my dad reads a book or two every other week; he's reading one at the moment, my mum reads anything that has a paperback and a good spine. Every long school holiday after I turned eight, my mum never allowed me to play like other kids around me did instead she'd saddle me with books ranging from ones for my age to ones I had no idea what the title was even talking about. Before I turned nine I had read George Clason's 'The richest man in Babylon', George Orwell's 'Animal Farm' and Robert Kiyosaki's 'Rich dad poor dad'. Like I said I had no idea what the book(s) was on about at that age but I remember how she told me to circle each big word with a pencil and look it up later and I got the added task of summarizing every book I read.

In my pre-teens my reading evolved; I switched to books like Jack Canfields 'Chicken soup for the soul series' and after I read Francine Rivers' 'Redeeming love' at fifteen I switched to Christian Fiction until my teenage years passed.

These days I would only be caught reading SCi-fi and paranormal books and maybe a bit of historical romance only because I love to read about how girls had to have chaperones escort them to see guys to avoid ruining their reputations. How hilarious  🤣🤣!
A part of me was dying to go against my parents in my first year of uni and get a collection of Mills and Boons because I was trying to explore my sexuality through the books but God forbid my African parents see me read such smut. In my mind's eye, I needed to be informed all round at least this was my excuse. Right now I feel indifferent to reading these kinds of books maybe because my parents made it look like so much of a big deal and life happened so I figured why bother! these things are really not as fancy as they write them.
Over the years the choice of books I read has stemmed from my outlook on life and different situations I have gotten in. My reading has somewhat dwindled as I have gone from the girl that reads three or more books in a week to almost none in a month. I am not proud of this but if I have to pair my former reading habit with my present life and work style more often than not I would not meet my target at work and in this part of the world no boss wants to ever hear you shirked your duties because of a book. More than anything my choice of books have also changed, the pre-teen me probably believed in fair princes with a charming and beautiful charisma to booth who gave love a different meaning but now after a couple of failed relationships and the insight to how hard it is to love yourself talk more of another human I will rather stick to believing love can be overrated sometimes.

Lets read Ibukun's part of how she lives the life of books at http://abookwormandahalf.com/

Just like its almost difficult sometimes in getting good at anything, reading although easy can take some time to master and excel at. Do you like books or like reading or maybe you will rather look up a review of a good book before you read then a bookwarmandahalf has got you covered. Although it may streamline you to a particular genre for a while remember all readers, as they say, are explorers and it don't hurt to explore.

Funny how life happened such that reading a book each month becomes infeasible. Out of curiosity, would you groom your kids in a similar fashion?

    1. Adolescence beat down on us hard so when you think of work you’ll not even remember if you’ve read a book or not. Hell yeah, my kids will read loads of book
